Important

What We Say & Do

RULE #1

When Coach says, ONE, TWO!…
You stop what you’re doing, pay attention, and say, THREE!

WHY?: Because sometimes we need the focus of the whole team, and we want to avoid talking over each other. We'll make sure everybody’s voice is heard when the time is right.

RULE #2

When Coach says, HOLD THE BALL!
YOU HOLD THE BALL!

RULE #3

When Coach says, TRAP!
Double team the man with the ball.
ONLY BETWEEN THE FREE THROW LINE AND THE BASE LINE.

RULE #4

When Coach says, PRESS!
Do full-court press defense.
ONLY 4TH AND 8TH PERIODS.

RULE #5

Communicate on the court.
Call out picks. Say, PICK!
Call out the number of the man you have on defense. Say, I GOT 2!
Call out rebounds. Say, REBOUND!
Call out for support to pass the ball if you’re trapped by defenders. Say, HELP!
Be sure to listen for your teammates and Coach Mike / Coach Angel for play calling.

REF (RESPECT, EFFORT, FUN)

R: RESPECT
Respect everyone. Treat coaches, players, refs, AND YOURSELF the right way.

E: EFFORT
Give your best effort and work hard.

F: FUN
Have fun and play free.

This means — supporting your teammates, giving yourself grace when things don't go your way, not arguing with the refs or opposing teams, doing your best, and knowing that you’re good enough to be on this team for a reason — so do your thing! As coaches, we’re here to help, so feel free to talk to us!

NOTE: Any issues with RESPECT or EFFORT — get ready to run or ride the bench.

SMOKED (SPREAD OUT, MOVE AROUND, OPEN MAN, KEEP CONTROL, EYES UP, DEFENSE)

S: SPREAD OUT!
Look for open space on the court.

M: MOVE WITHOUT THE BALL!
Get open, cut to the basket, set a pick or screen, get in position for a rebound, etc.

O: OPEN MAN!
Look for the open man.

K: KEEP CONTROL!
Stay controlled with the ball, make smart decisions, and limit turnovers. Control the pace of the game and play with confidence!

E: EYES UP!
See what’s happening. Teammates and defense — where are they and what are they doing?

D: DEFENSIVE PRESSURE!
Stay locked in on defense — stay in front of your man, contest shots, and apply pressure without fouling. Defense wins games!

BEEF (BEFORE YOU SHOOT, THINK BALANCE, ELBOW, EYES, FOLLOW THROUGH)

B: BALANCE

E: ELBOW

E: EYES

F: FOLLOW THROUGH

Practices

Who?

Ideally, practices will include ALL players on the team. We understand that things happen and scheduling can be a challenge, but we would appreciate your best effort to attend.

Practices will be managed by one or both coaches depending on availability. It would be great if one or more player parents would volunteer as backups in the event coaches are unavailable.

What?

Practices will last approximately 1 hour, including basic basketball drills, training, and scrimmages.

PLAYERS ARE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE ON TIME, BE APPROPRIATELY DRESSED, AND BRING THEIR OWN WATER.

WE AIM TO PRACTICE WITH INTENTION AND INTENSITY, WHETHER IT’S SLOWING THINGS DOWN TO ENHANCE SKILLSETS OR GOING AT GAME SPEED TO PREPARE PLAYERS FOR COMPETITION AGAINST OTHER TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE. PLAYERS SHOULD COME READY TO PLAY AND GIVE THEIR BEST EFFORT.

When?

Mondays and Wednesdays. Likely 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

BUT PERHAPS NOT ALL MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS. THIS WILL DEPEND ON COACH AND COURT AVAILABILITY. PRACTICES WILL BE SCHEDULED VIA TEAMSNAP.

AS COACHES, WE PURPOSELY SELECTED PLAYERS WHOSE AVAILABILITY COINCIDED PER YOUR LISTED CONFLICT DAYS ON THE LEAGUE REGISTRATION FORM. SO PRACTICE DATES AND TIMES WILL BE ASSIGNED ACCORDINGLY.

WE MAY EVEN SET WEEKEND MORNING PRACTICES ON OCCASION WHERE PLAYERS CAN JOIN IF THEY LIKE.

Where?

Finding a basketball court is always a challenge, whether it’s indoor or outdoor. If outdoor, we must always take into account the practice time and whether the basketball court has lights given that sunset is at ~6:00 PM.

WE WILL ADD OTHER OPTIONS BELOW AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE.

Attire & Equipment

Jerseys, etc.

We expect jerseys to be delivered to Temple Beth Am on Friday, February 7, 2025 in the afternoon. The commissioner will inform us once they are delivered and sorted, so one of the coaches can pick them up. We plan to give the jerseys to players immediately before the first game on Monday, February 10, 2025.

If you have any concerns about that, please let us know. Note that each team is receiving a bag with eight jerseys and eight shorts. We will do our best to distribute jerseys based on size. If we can't make the provided sizes work, we've been instructed by the league to let them know in order to swap out to other sizes as needed. We’d like to make an effort to distribute the jerseys in such a way that we avoid the need to swap out, so if your player is available Friday afternoon to try the uniform on-site, please let us know.

PRACTICES: Players can wear whatever appropriate sportswear they like.

GAMES: Players must wear the jersey and shorts provided by the league.

Accessories

NO: Jewelry, bracelets, or necklaces of any kind.

YES: Headbands, wristbands, arm / leg sleeves, arm / leg braces, and mouth guards. Small manufacturer logos only. Violation of this rule will result in an immediate indirect technical foul to the coach when the player enters the game.

Shoes

Basketball shoes that are in good condition are highly encouraged for providing players the proper support to enhance performance and avoid injuries.

Basketballs

Official Basketball Size: 28.5 in

Basketballs will be provided at both practices and games.
